The Importance of Coil Awareness Training
Recent data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reveals a concerning trend in the construction sector. Post-pandemic, there has been a 70% increase in accidents, with the industry reporting twice as many fatalities compared to agriculture, forestry, and mining. This data underscores the harsh reality that while safety is often emphasised, the actual on-site conditions present significant risks. Fatal injuries in construction are five times higher than the average across all industries for the period 2023/24, with the most common causes being falls from height, being struck by a moving object, and being struck by a moving vehicle.
The hidden dangers of coil trailers
Within the construction industry, one of the lesser-understood, but potentially deadly hazards is the stored energy release that can be experienced during the unwind of a coil from a coil trailer. Pipe coils held within coil trailers, are commonly used in various applications such as traditional trench work, above-ground operations, and trenchless technology, pose significant risks if not handled correctly.
Specialist coil awareness training from Groundforce
Recognising the need for enhanced safety measures, Groundforce Training offers a specialised EUSR Coil Trailer Awareness Course. This course is designed to help operators and managers familiarise themselves with the specific safety challenges associated with coil trailers. This safety critical training provides a great opportunity to not only identify the hazards, but to also minimise the likelihood of harm before handling the equipment.
Course Details and Objectives
This essential half-day course is aimed at operators who handle coil trailers, as well as managers, and have not received formal training. The course covers a comprehensive range of topics, including:
- Conducting thorough risk assessments
- Understanding the risks associated with coil trailers and ancillary equipment
- Proper procedures for cutting bands before installation
- Safe methods for loading pipes onto trailers
- Procedures for safely releasing the tail end of a pipe, including managing the release of stored energy
- Differentiating between various makes and models of coil trailers
- Best practices for handling, storing, and transporting pipes and fittings
- Pre- and post-usage safety checks, including maintenance
- Adhering to licensing rules and current legislation/procedures
Upon completion of the course, participants receive certification valid for three years, documented on an EU Skills – EUSR SMART card with photo ID.
